I have this little sister, Lola. She is small, and very funny.

Painfully early this morning, we left for home. Goodbye to my zen and yoga in the canyon.

But hello to a reminder to maybe take a bit more time for myself, and maybe reclaim a sliver of that zen sometime in my day. To have an appreciation for the small things. We learned from our guides that, strangely, in the midst of all this beauty, this community doesn't recycle or have a good source for natural foods (no Whole Foods or Trader Joe's and only a fledgling farmer's market). I find this strange, that in the middle of this natural wonder, there seems to be a lack of appreciation for it.

But maybe therein is the lesson. To return home and take the time to appreciate the natural wonder that exists in your own back yard. Because, as I look around, I see we have much to appreciate.

The whole series of Utah photos exists here.

    A Sunday like I remember

The funny thing about parenthood is when you recall your "childhood", you have no memories of the first part. You know, the baby days.

Of course I have some early memories, but I can really only recall solid history from about kindergarten on. So when I became a parent, weekends felt so unfamiliar. One day rolled into the next, and it was an endless stretch of diapers, feedings, and trying to squeeze in errands and sleep. It didn't feel restful at all.

But recently I've begun to feel some familiarity. I'm beginning to recognize some signs of "weekend" as it exists in my head.

Today Neko and Shep were on the patio. They were digging and mucking about. There was sand and shovels and water. And then suddenly it was a full-blown bakery of mud pies and cakes, and little feet darting into the kitchen to collect pans and muffins tins.

I swear they were out there for hours. Tom and I puttered around the house, cleaning and checking a few things off our lists. Entertaining Ellery, who's not quite old enough to be fully engaged.

If things keep rolling along like this, I might even find myself snoozing on the couch one of these days. I can't even begin to describe how delicious that sounds.

Noticing how much fun kids can have on a swing made of rope and a wooden plank is a great reminder that fun doesn't have to be complicated.

    Tired of the cold

I'm really done with the cold weather. We had that little taste of spring last week, and now it's back to being cold. Not winter cold, but just that in-between, oops, I left the house in a hoodie and now I'm freezing my butt off cold.

    Ready. For. Spring.

  • Mmmmm.

Today the temps soared into the seventies. It was downright dreamy.

We met up with Ben, Kate and their kids at one of our favorite parks. The kids ran and played until we decided it was time for lunch. We noshed on bagels and soup, and I'd swear that all four adults actually went home having had real conversation. How refreshing.

After quiet time we spent the rest of the day outside. There was swinging and running and laughing and playing. I picked up an entire winter's worth of poop, which, when you have three dogs, is substantial. (I think if we bought a snow machine we could sell lift tickets.) But because of the beautiful weather, I almost didn't even mind.

I was so immersed in the day, I didn't even pick up the camera once.

I left the house at 8:00am this morning with three children in PJs and a car full of snacks and movies. We stayed away until nearly 5pm, leaving Tom to tend to the goings-on at the house.

In the time I was gone, a band and a video crew ambushed our house and shot a music video. There were six or seven vehicles in the driveway. Huge bins of equipment. Lights, monitors, and make-up. Our entire sectional couch moved into the mudroom.

Other than some straggler cars in the driveway and a big box of leftover pastries, you wouldn't have known anything happened here today.

It was a bit surreal. But this whole week has been. Weird things go down in the doldrums of February.

I bought these stickers for Tom a few years back (or maybe it was my mother, I can't remember). He uncovered them the other day, and ever since then, little faces have been popping up all over the place.

  • School? Who’s going to school?

January 1/2: No school due to New Year's
January 6: Two hour delay (school canceled for Shep)
January 15: Two hour delay (school canceled for Shep)
January 16: No school due to teacher in-service
January 19: No school due to MLK Day
    January 26: One hour delay
January 27-30: School is closed due to weather
February 4: School is closed due to weather

I need a new haiku for this year, but, omigosh, how do I fit that into 17 syllables?

  • On a side note…

I am crushed to learn to they will soon cease publication of my very favorite parenting magazine, Wondertime. Quick, go now and scoop up all their great ideas because the site will likely disappear soon.

Anyone with any suggestions of another periodical that might fill the void, please let me know.
