Today we went on this field trip with Neko's class where we visited both a zoology and geology museum, but I forgot my camera, so all I can tell you is that it was neat enough that I think we'll return.

Instead, I will share with you some photos I found on my iPhone. The first is of Ellery shortly before her surgery where she's all doped up. The second is after she'd screamed for about 40 minutes following surgery until this nice nurse walked by with a bag of goldfish and she suddenly snapped out of it and was all like, "Well, no one told me there were going to be GOLDFISH."

Tonight Tom wandered in to discover that Neko had decided it was time to take her toy lizard to the dentist.

Today Neko’s class went to visit the horse stables. While they were there they made these simple horse head on a stick things, a cheap version of the classic toy, and omigosh if it isn’t the most amazing toy ever. Neko has been riding it around like a seasoned equestrian.

When we sat down for dinner, she pointed over at the mudroom and showed us, with the help of a little blue tape, the horse had been placed in her stable.

  • A conversation

We have a rule that whoever gets in the car first gets to make the listening/viewing selection. I suspect that’s what prompted this conversation between Neko and myself.

“I’m the first person in the car!”

“No you’re not. You are actually the third person in the car.”

“I’m the first girl in the car!”

“Um, no, Ellery was here before you.”

    (Small pause.)

“I’m the first FIVE-YEAR-OLD in the car.”

Yes, you are my friend. However, while that may get you into kindergarten, it will not grant you The Power of Choice.

Phew! It doesn’t look very big in the picture, but it’s made up of FOUR normal size cakes, making it a whopping 36 x 12 inches. When I realized we had over 70 people coming to the party, a quick Google search confirmed that my original plan would serve only 25.

The cake is based on Neko and Shep’s favorite Charlie and Lola book, We Honestly Can Look After Your Dog, where Lola and Lotta lose Marv’s dog Sizzles. All in all, it turned out pretty well.

Those brown things? Those are Sizzles’ footprints, but they turned out looking a bit more like poop. I would have scraped them off and redone them, but omigosh, I’m already beyond exhausted.

I know these are terrible photos in terms of quality, but have you seen the air they’re getting there? Currently warming up the car for our trip to the ER…

What a difference a year makes! Last year we were cajoling Neko onto the field (to no avail). We quit the whole program entirely after her first game. But this year? She happily ran out onto the field and played the whole game, only taking breaks for water.

I promise not to bore you all with a thousand pictures of my kid playing soccer for the next four Saturdays. But the weather was really beautiful and Tom stayed home with the other kids, so I actually had two free hands.

The other reason there are so many is because it is an excellent indicator of how much time she hung in there. The game lasted 45 minutes, and since only three people from her team showed up to play, all three girls played the whole time.

And yet, she still had energy to attend the kids festival on the way home, complete with 30 minutes on the bounce house and bouncy slide. And then she jumped on the trampoline once we got home while she watched tv. I mean, seriously, I can only imagine how much I could get in a day if I had that kind of energy.

I should also mention that she scored three goals. In the right goal!

  • How much do I love…

…that Neko calls the Kratt brothers, of her favorite new show Zoboomafoo, “the Crack Brothers”.

I’ve tried to correct her to no avail, so, um, maybe she knows something we don’t?
