    Favorite things

Something amazing happened when Neko turned four. All of sudden she became this person I could hang out with, and she’s starting to like to do the things we like to do. Don’t get me wrong, I love that baby stage, but I’m loving having a new friend to hang out with.

Tonight Tom had class, and Neko managed to squeeze in a nap, which meant she’d be up late and I was on my own. And what that really meant is that it would be well after 9pm until I got to watch Oprah’s Favorite Things episode, which aired this afternoon.

But then I started thinking—Neko is all about Christmas and presents and surprises, and, hey, she might really dig this show!

So after Shep and Ellery were in bed, we cracked out the nail polish and painted her fingers and toes while we watched Oprah unveil her list. As each new box appeared, Neko would squeal, “What’s in THAT box?” And when they previewed this enormous box, she could hardly sit still until they revealed the biggest box of all, which held an LG refrigerator with built-in television. “Dad would really like that!” was her review.

And, like Christmas morning, it was over too soon. She sighed as the credits rolled and said, “Mom, that was really great.”

Okay, so maybe it’s not singing carols or hanging holly, but I feel as though this will be a holiday tradition for years to come.

Neko loves to dress up. And for ages, she has been trying to con someone else into dressing up with her. Thankfully, Shep is now sometimes on board.

Today they kept disappearing into Neko’s bedroom and then reappearing as new characters. Pictured are my personal favorites, the twin turtles. It should be noted that Shep is squeezed into a costume meant for a kid who’s not even two.

Thanks to Chris, who grabbed my camera off the counter and started snapping back at these turtles.

What is that under all that hair? Do I see? A face?

Today Susie and I were talking, and the subject of Colorforms came up. And then I realized it might be about time to crack them back out. We’ve had them for a while, but when we initially tried them, Neko didn’t quite get it, so we tucked them away for a while.

I think it’s safe to say this is going in the activity rotation.

Neko is obsessed with this costume lately. Tom even helped her make a Dorothy the Dinosaur mask to go with it. Today we found her, sound asleep in her room, in full costume.

It’s been raining like crazy around here, which, of course, coincides with the time we’re surrounded by perfect fall leaves. Susie and I took advantage of the break in the weather to hustle the kids out for a long walk on campus and take some photos.

In between running noses and hacking coughs, we were able to snap a few shots.

    First official field trip

This was Neko’s first school field trip. Participation was optional, but I felt compelled to attend. I couldn’t imagine a bunch of parents showing up, but me not be one of them. Neko would have been really disappointed.

I arranged for my dad to watch Shep and Ellery so Neko and I could have some one-on-one time. I think I had some image in my head of the two of us, hand in hand, walking through the pumpkin patch. And while it was a fine trip, it was really just a hay ride and then picking a pumpkin out of a bin. And Neko was having a bit of a grouchy day and had a big meltdown toward the end of the trip.

Sometimes life is truly spectacular. Sometimes life is the pits. But sometimes, I suppose, it has to just be sort of mediocre, and you gotta be okay with that.

Today was picture day at Neko’s preschool, which she flatly refused to participate in. I’m not sure why I even bothered to fill out the envelope, since I saw this one coming a mile down the road…
