For Xmas, R&D gave us a night away a hotel while they stayed at our house and watched the kids. All three of them. I cannot think of a better gift.

Since we had our company holiday dinner tonight in the Big City, it seemed like a good night to just stay away. We could have a few drinks and not have to scurry home, knowing the kids would be peeling our eyelids open at 6am.

Yummy dinner. Delicious dessert. Good friends. Waking up of my own accord. And an elevator with a shiny ceiling where you can take reflective photos.

  • Happy birthday Tom

Today is Tom’s birthday. Perhaps the biggest gift of all was that we shipped out the last of over 600 items that have been consuming us for the past two weeks.

We are looking forward to a weekend of where the only shirts we handle are the ones on our backs.

Tomorrow is Tom’s birthday, but he’ll be working all day and we’re going out to dinner that night, so there’s really no time for celebratory cake. So I decided to make one today.

But he recently confessed that he hates all cakes out of a box, and really only wants a homemade cake. But I didn’t have time to research some fabulous recipe, so instead, I made an apple pie. From scratch. Even the crust!

And just in case my love for this man was ever in doubt, I must point out that all the stars aligned in that magic way, and all three of my children had quiet time for 90 minutes at the same time, which never, ever happens. And I spent the entire time making a pie for Tom’s birthday.

That, my friends, is true love.

Football? Male bonding in this house happens over guitars and chocolate chip muffins.

While I was away last weekend, Tom detailed my car. Gone were the raisins which stuck to my shoes and the endless crumbs of crackers and granola bars.

Of course, this morning, Shep spilled an entire cup of hot chocolate on the floor of the car. But for that brief moment, it was glorious.

Six years ago today, we were all still reeling from 9/11. But somehow we were blessed enough to have nearly all the people we love come together at a little old schoolhouse in the middle of nowhere to clap and cheer as Tom and I sealed the deal.

Tom and Chris took the kids this morning while I got some time back in exchange for losing part of my weekend. Tom spent time this weeked wearing the business hat, which is the funny thing about working for yourself—your schedule becomes a bit blurry and work doesn’t always happen in the traditional hours. Kudos to Tom, though, because he always tries to even out the score and give me some time back.

They went to one of our favorite parks, and the kids were beyond excited that Chris came along. As an extra bonus, he took all the great photos you see above.

I really do love having Chris around. I probably don’t say it anywhere near enough or in the right sort of wordy, eloquent way which he’ll mispronounce and then I’ll correct and then he’ll sigh and then we’ll obsessively tidy while we discuss what romantic comedies are coming out soon.

It’s becoming clear to me that in ten years Tom will be rockin’ out with the kids and I’m going to be the embarrassing mom who uses all the wrong lingo and is about a decade or two behind on music.

Today Tom took Neko to get her first skateboard. In a week or two they will be taking a lesson together, and in a few years I am certain that Tom will have fabricated some massive skate park out of plywood in our back yard.

Perhaps I will make them listen to James Taylor as I drive them to the emergency room.

Tom makes fun breakfasts like this all the time. It’s about time we documented one.

Okay, Tom has just informed me that, although he does make stupendous breakfast faces, this one was actually made by Neko. Which makes even that much cooler.

Shep has this thing where he drags Tom over to the piano and then he goes to get his guitar and takes a seat on the chair next to the piano. It is then Tom’s job to play Coldplay’s “Yellow” on the piano while Shep accompanies with guitar and vocals.

I will warn you that it’s very possible that your computer might implode from the insane amount of cuteness you’ll find on this link.
