    Valentine’s Day: Part 4

We're really not Valentine's Day people. I know you can't tell, but up until recently, we'd kind of chalked it up to a Hallmark holiday.

But as our kids get older, I'm becoming more of a fan. Not for chocolates and bouquets of roses, but the whole idea that there's a holiday that celebrates love.

Without my knowledge, Tom made reservations for us at our favorite restaurant, the one that takes a simple Brussels sprout and turns it into the food I would request as my last meal. And not just any reservation, but the kitchen seats.

The restaurant has an open kitchen, in full view of the diners. They've created just enough space on the dividing wall that you can cozy a few chairs up, and watch the chefs at work while you dine. It was like watching an expertly choreographed ballet while we ate.

I can only imagine how far in advance Tom had to make this reservation. The kitchen seats get snapped up quick, much less on Valentine's Day.

Lately we've been missing the "us" we had before children. The spontaneous folks who went out on the town and had interests beyond prepping mac & cheese and tracking nap times. For nearly two hours we sat amongst adults, immersed ourselves in the hustle and bustle, and ate fantastic food.

I can't tell you how refreshing it was.

Special shout-out to Chele, who watched the kids, which made it all possible.

(Shep really was with us today. He just never made it in front of the camera. Will make it up to him this week…)

As I prepare for my (surprise) Valentine's dinner out, Neko filches my boots, and discovers the power of Very Tall Shoes.

She insists I get the camera and take a few shots, and I hop to it as quickly as I can, because Neko requesting a photo be taken only happens once in a blue moon. (Secretly wishing I'd taken a moment to switch lenses so these would be more in focus…but not complaining.)

    Superheroes

A while back, Tom took the kids for the day while I worked in the shop. When I came home, the kids were flying around with capes, newly minted superheroes.

Tom had been planning to make capes for the for Christmas, but we got swamped, and decided it could wait. So one day, while the kids had quiet time, he sat down at the sewing machine and whipped up three capes.

This past week he added these wrist bands to the costumes, because, clearly, every superhero should also have wristbands.

I hope you kids realize you scored a pretty good one in the Dad department. Not every dad sews capes and hot glues wristbands. Not every dad hunts around the craft store for the glittery pink and purple craft foam.

We will have to find other people to teach you how to play football or fix a car, but all in all, I think we hit the jackpot.

    Tom celebrates the inauguration

Tom decided to celebrate the inauguration by getting his wisdom teeth pulled.

Okay, really it was just poor scheduling. Or was it? Come to think of it, he got to lie in bed all day and watch every minute of coverage while still totally numb. Hmmm.

Anyway, here he is just after we arrived home, with cotton packed in the back of his mouth. Those pieces of floss help you pull the cotton out after a set amount of time. I'm thinking the look will be all the rage in clubs next year.

It was only 9am, and it was already a bad day. Bad orthodontic news. I had planned to enter 2009 free of orthodontia, but it was not to be. Throw in the holiday crazy, and I found myself more than just a little weepy.

Thank goodness for Marlo and Nancy who met us for a playdate, even though we were really late and extra grouchy. And we left Nancy's house in shambles due to an incoming ice storm and already storming children.

And a big hooray for Tom, who drove the kids in circles as my appointment lasted far longer than expected, and nodded sympathetically as I ranted and threw my arms in the air.

When I arrived home from the playdate, there were flowers and Indian food. The black cloud over my head made me forget to take a picture upon arrival, so you'll have to make do with the picture of the leftovers. There was another container of rice that said "I love you."

    Bad day gone good.

I wish I had it in me to write a long eloquent entry about Tom, but omigosh, his birthday always rolls around right in the crazy before Xmas and I am SO TIRED. I try hard not to let it get lost in the shuffle, and thus we celebrate his half-birthday. But on this actual day of his birth, we like to celebrate just a little.

In the wee hours, Shellie brought over scones with birthday candles, so we sang and blew out candles as the sun rose. Tom took off for the afternoon and evening to see a movie and have a day off, but before he left, he finished the volcano project he started with the kids the day before.

These projects are the things that remind me how lucky we are to have him in our lives. I can't imagine these kids without him. They wouldn't blare Joan Jett at 9am on a Saturday. We'd have far less box houses and pirate ships. Colored ice cubes and frozen balloons are ideas for baths I never would have thought of. We wouldn't blow out candles at a random Thursday dinner.

I can hardly list all the amazing stuff he does for the kids, myself, and our friends and family. But the list is long, and he always does it with a smile.

    Happy birthday, T.

While I was catching a few moments of afternoon nap, Tom helped Neko and Shep turn these Panera bagel boxes into little houses for their pets.

I love that I married a crafty man. I suppose it makes up for the fact that he's totally useless when it comes to football.

    Happy dinner to you

I need to get better about meal planning. It's one of my major downfalls. Suddenly it's 4:30pm and I'm in a complete state of panic about the forthcoming meal.

Some days Tom comes in to find I have a furrowed brow and elevated blood pressure, and he throws together a meal for the kids while I peruse the take-out menus for us.

He always does fun things for dinner that I never would have thought of. Letter sandwiches (or pancakes) are a big favorite of his, but this was our first dinner with candles. We all sang "happy dinner to you" and blew out candles. Which made me think, why don't we do candles more often? Why do we just reserve that fun for birthdays?

So go light some candles and sing a rousing round of Happy Tuesday. It's bound to put everyone in a good mood.

Seven years ago today, right before dusk, Tom and I made it official. Anne and Chris rang the old school bell as we sealed the deal.

I still have yet to get our wedding negatives scanned and photo books created. I have some guilt about this as I remember I adored pouring over my parents' wedding photos. Maybe I can get that in motion before we celebrate our eighth.

Anyway, Tom and I are both under a cloud of allergies and Tom's new laptop bit the dust as the day came to a close, so it's perhaps not the most romantic of evenings, but I can't imagine anyone else I'd rather share a box of Kleenex and schedule Apple Genius Bar appointments with than Tom.
