School was canceled. I wasn't surprised, as it required three people to push me up a hill on my way home from picking up Neko from school yesterday. What a mess.

Anyway, it's a snow day today.

I've often said that my countertops are an indicator of my general state of mind. The countertops are filled to the edges. There are pieces of pipe cleaners all over the place because did you know kids can spend nearly 45 minutes cutting pipe cleaners into small pieces? Awesome.

However, the worst moment of the morning happened when I noticed I hadn't seen Shep in a while. He'd scurried off about fifteen minutes earlier to the bathroom, looking like things were pretty urgent. So I wandered into the bathroom to discover an awful scene. I actually documented it, but in my snow day frenzy I somehow deleted the photos off the memory card. Shep, you lucked out on that.

Anyway, first of all, he didn't make it to the toilet. So there's that. And then he discovered that if you get toilet paper wet, and then throw it at the wall, it sticks. And he discovered this over and over until he'd filled a good part of two walls of the bathroom with wet toilet paper (thankfully, he used water).

So I cleaned up poop and pulled toilet paper off walls and then put Shep's stock pot in time out for 24 hours.

Thankfully, my parents and Bonnie took the kids for a few hours while I pulled the house back together. The countertops are once again clean-ish.

I still can't believe I deleted that photo.

  • School? Who’s going to school?

January 1/2: No school due to New Year's
January 6: Two hour delay (school canceled for Shep)
January 15: Two hour delay (school canceled for Shep)
January 16: No school due to teacher in-service
January 19: No school due to MLK Day
    January 26: One hour delay
January 27-30: School is closed due to weather
February 4: School is closed due to weather

I need a new haiku for this year, but, omigosh, how do I fit that into 17 syllables?

Ellery is all about the camera these days. She's demanding I take her photo and then she likes to see it on the back of my camera.

The first photo is when I asked her to say "cheese". The second happened shortly after.

Then, about two hours later, during her nap, she threw up all over her crib. Because, that, my friends, is the story of my life.

Some time ago Neko began talking about Zero the Hero. He's part of the kindergarten curriculum where they learn to count by tens. Neko kept talking about how he's coming to visit their classroom. I think he's supposed to come visit on one of the ten days (the 10th, 20th, or 30th), but I think he's had some scheduling conflicts.

Anyway, this morning Neko created her very own Zero the Hero, which, in my own humble opinion, is nothing short of brilliant.

Who couldn't use a few more superhero photos? Especially when they're superheroes that are channeling their inner dinosaur.

A while back, Tom took the kids for the day while I worked in the shop. When I came home, the kids were flying around with capes, newly minted superheroes.

Tom had been planning to make capes for the for Christmas, but we got swamped, and decided it could wait. So one day, while the kids had quiet time, he sat down at the sewing machine and whipped up three capes.

This past week he added these wrist bands to the costumes, because, clearly, every superhero should also have wristbands.

I hope you kids realize you scored a pretty good one in the Dad department. Not every dad sews capes and hot glues wristbands. Not every dad hunts around the craft store for the glittery pink and purple craft foam.

We will have to find other people to teach you how to play football or fix a car, but all in all, I think we hit the jackpot.

  • On a side note…

I am crushed to learn to they will soon cease publication of my very favorite parenting magazine, Wondertime. Quick, go now and scoop up all their great ideas because the site will likely disappear soon.

Anyone with any suggestions of another periodical that might fill the void, please let me know.

Barb (Tom's mom) put together an amazing survival kit for us, chock full of fun and activities. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. It made this afternoon take a big 180 in the right direction.

Neko and Shep both have strep throat. Neko has some weird side effects which require topical treatment. Tom is still being medicated for the uvulitis that set in after he developed dry sockets after he got his wisdom teeth removed. Tomorrow we'll take in Ellery to see if she has strep as well. The top of our microwave is beginning to resemble a pharmacy.

On the upside, I'm feeling a lot better!

I promise tomorrow I will post something uplifting about rainbows or bunnies or the like.

It snowed buckets today. Those big, beautiful flakes that pile up in drifts.

Last night I had the chance, before the major snow began, to
pick up Indian food and run out to the library and rent as many DVDs as
they would allow. We got to begin a snow day well fed and well prepared, which makes all the difference.

Don't get me wrong—the crazies are still crazy. But we had an ace up our sleeve when things started to fall apart.

Plus, Tom sent me to the shop for half of the day to do some work and regain my sanity. Thank goodness. It made the rest of the day doable.
